Influences of client
My clients influences
Izzy walker, my client is inspired heavily by many artists to do with spoken word and within the music industry, her pieces are mainly based off depression and the issues of the youth today. Izzy has originally started with spoken word pieces in order for her to be a more capable song writer and novelist. The influences are which I am going to talk about have impacted her writing style and subject matters in her writing. I have researched into this because I want to truly understand how I can understand her writing to the point where I can create the best visual piece for her that I can.
Lil peep
Lil peep was a young emo rap artist who sadly last year passed away to a fentanol overdose at the age of 20, Peep was a very talented artist who was forming his own new style of hip hop which the world had never seen before, he used rap and Edm style beats while singing in a very pop punk style a type of music versatility that many artists do not have. Lil peep's lyrical content in his songs reflected on feelings of loss, pain, suffering, relationships and drug abuse. After speaking to izzy about her influences she has explained to me that peep influenced her writing in the way that peep managed to create an overwhelming sense of sadness in his music but managed to keep the lyrics interesting and how he managed to talk about issues which had never been talked about before in the rap industry. My take on lil peep is that his music shows the embodiment of pain and sadness which not many artist in his genre were willing to write about and since his tragic death in 2017 his music has allowed others to speak out on issues to do with drug addiction and depression which has impacted the music industry in a way that not many other musicians could do.
Kendrick Lamar Kendrick lamar is a multiple Grammy winning artist who in time in recent years has become one of the most influential and philosophical artists of the past decade. Kendrick's body of work in the music industry has been mostly praised because of his very challenging and visionary way of writing, he has covered issues based on; race, religion, suicide, depression, violence and Love. Kendrick lamar to izzy is a very important Influence in her writing because she believes that kendrick is not a rapper in the sense of his word play, she thinks he is more of a poet in the fact in the way that he manages to create so many different interpretations of what his lyrics actually mean within his songs. In my opinion I believe that Kendrick Lamar is an amazing artist who breaks the boundaries with the way he bends and manipulates words to create stories and messages which can only be told by an artist with true poetic talent. A peice by kendrick lamar which Izzy has explained to me is one of the reasons she started writing spoke word pieces is 'FEAR' which appears on kendrick's new album DAMN, which to me is very similar to most spoken word pieces it doesn't heavily rely on the music and is more focused on tic use of words rather than the entire song as a whole. The most prevenlant verse on the song to izzy is in which Kendrick talks about all the ways in which he will die and ends with 'I'll probably die because that's what you do at seventeen' After listening to and analysing some of the lyrical content in this song I can understand how this has influenced izzy's work in the way that it talks about issues to do with self reflection and society. XXXTENTACION xxxtentacion is a 20 year old alternative artist who's music specialises in delivering support and messages to help to his generation with depression and other pressing issues to do with Teen culture today. Even though he is considered to be a very controversial artist xxxtentacion has a massive fan base of young followers who have been inspired and motivated by his philosophy of life and his methods of helping other cope with pain and suffering. Izzy has told me X is probably her main writing influence because he is one of the first she ever listened to, which made her understand depression and anxiety in such a complex Manor, she said a piece which inspired her most out of any of his pieces was a song called 'fuck love' which relates very heavily to the piece that we are currently filming, it relates in the fact that it details the myth of love and the obsession that the idea of love creates. in my opinion I think xxxtentacion is a very inspirational artist who creates music to a niche audience but still has the Influence to impact the lives of many people through his writing and sheer preformative talent.
Hobo Johnson
My clients most recent influence to her style of performance is up and coming hip-hop artist Hobo Johnson. Despite being generalised under the hip-hop genre, Johnson has created his own sub-genre combining the idea of rap in more of a spoken-word, creative style with sounds of folk-punk bands, the actual beats of his songs being compared to bands such as The Front Bottoms. Hobo Johnson expresses mainly his ideas and experiences of love through his more popular songs, however addresses his battle with slight alcoholism, bad past experiences such as being arrested or being homeless at a young age and more creative ideas about his chances of making it big and following his dream regardless of what others would say. Izzy explained she heavily relates to Hobo Johnson’s style of writing not only through the similarities of their creative flow but finds connections in his songs she can understand on a much more personal level. She continued telling me how she feels inspired by someone who has made a name for himself by doing what made him happy and not following the general ‘rules’ of writing music or poetry pieces, somehow finding the perfect middle ground to merge both styles of writing in his own unique way.
