Evaluation of Independent client

For this project, I was assigned a brief which required me to create a piece of promotional media for a client of my choice. When i started this project I originally wanted to create a portfolio of images for a company to promote them as a company. When we were creating our scripts with Lillie Ferrari, I approached her to ask if she needed any promotion done for her script writing company 'Script 6' she accepted the offer and our original plan was for me to make a series of mood boards and a portfolio of images that showed off the members of the company.I researched into various styles of commercial photography and looked into ways I could produce more creative portraits. Sadly after a large amount of scheduling issues issues, mainly to do with the snowstorms that left the college closed for almost an entire week, I decided I would have to change my client in order to help meet my deadlines. To replace my client I had asked my friend Izzy, who is a writer and performer of spoken word pieces to be client. After restarting my research and pre-production, I decided to look into spoken word prices, stand up comedy, depression and the influences of my client. I looked into filming techniques from music videos and spoken word pieces, I looked mostly into the use of overexposure and how it can be used to make more interesting images, I also looked into use of pans and how to use scenery in an effective way. I tried to incorporate all of these elements into my work as well as a variety of shots. But when filming had started I found
myself not using a large amount of shots, I did this particularly because I wanted to make filming as comfortable as I could for Izzy, because it wouldn't really feel like a natural performance If i filmed a large amount of shots and spliced them all together I don't think the delivery of the performance would not be as consistent because it wouldn't feel as natural as we were aiming to make it feel. Another filming I added to our shoots was I added cutaways and I filmed the conversations we had before izzy was performing, I used the cutaways to make the most of environment around us and to show off some scenery which we were filming around to not just show izzys performance and keep the audience interested, I added the conversations aswell as a way to show off izzy's personality as an artsit, which this whole project main aim was to do, create the persona and capture the performance of Izzy to help launch her career as a writer. After we had finished filming I had edited two cuts of the footage one which Included music and one that didn't I, I did this because spoken word pieces can be used in both formats that way, the music cut was not my primary cut because I used remixed instrumentals from artists Izzy is inspired by which was 'Everybody Dies in their nightmares' By 'xxxtentacion' and 'Thug Life' By '21 Savage'  and to avoid issues with copyright we didn't want to use this as the primary edit for when we put it onto YouTube. I feel creating this edit was helpful to my experimentation because both me and izzy talked about adding music but the music we originally intended to create for the video is still in development so I decided to use these instrumentals because the were both instrumentals me and Izzy both liked but the also matched her style of flow and word play so I felt I would have to add these instrumentals to meet the expectations of my client. Overall I feel that it terms of what me and my client wanted to create and the image we wanted to create for her as an artist we had reached our goals, but I would change a few things about the final product; some more camera movements and more experimental ways of filming would be helpful to use when making my next project, to be more organised professionally for scheduling filming and making sure filming is completed on my deadlines, this was mainly down to health issues with my client and my last minute change of client towards the end, I would also look into more techniques with filming in interior locations instead of just
using outside locations because I had ran into various issues with sound and some lighting problems so I will be looking more into filming using more interior locations. In terms of developing my skills as a filmmaker, this project allowed me to be more creative than I ever have been for the past year of this course, so I developed a few skills in terms of being more creative with my work, I did this by looking into the things that inspired my client to create this project with me, and also because we have similar artistic tastes I found that working on research about my client was much more enjoyable and it helped me learn more about the vision of the project and how I could appeal more to my client in the way I captured her performance. In terms of my camera work I feel that my skills developed in the way that I would prepare the shots before shooting them, I felt like sometimes when I was filming I didn't follow my plans enough and it didn't help with some of the shots I created but I now understand if I will be filming any projects in future their will have to be a larger degree of planning to help my craft better shots and use my experimentation in the correct ways. Overall I felt that my ability to work independently was tested throughout this project, some circumstances had left me questioning if this project would be able to be completed but I had used my pass skills I haven learnt this year and the past two years of my education with shooting and recording sound and developed them by working on them independently producing my own work with my own client.
