What is a spoken word piece
'Spoken word' is a art performance art which is based upon written dialogue. It is an oral art that focuses on the aesthetic of Word play, Slang, Pitch, Tone, Rhyming and Voice Inflection. Spoken word pieces are related to various other forms of art such as Hip Hop, Jazz Poetry, Poetry Slams, Comedy routines, Sketches, Stand Up, etc. From my Understanding a spoken word piece is a written piece of art which requires the writer or performer to perform in some type of way that allows the person to express the words in a rhythmic or preformative way.

Kate Tempest
Kate Tempest is a English Poet, Musician and Playwright, who's Influences are are artists such as; Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, W B Yeates and Wu-Tang Clan. In 2013 she released her first poetry book, Everything Speaks In Its Own Way, which was a limited release on her own imprint, Zigaro. at 26 years old she made her first theatrical spoken word piece, Brand new ancients (2012) at the Battersea Arts Centre, The piece won Kate The Herald Angel and The Ted Hughes Prize. Since then Kate has gone on to release her first Album 'Everybody Down' which was Nominated for the Mercury prize, she released her first novel 'The Bricks That Built The Houses'  which was a Sunday Times Bestseller, In September 2016 Kate was chosen to curate the Brighton Festival, She was once again Nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2017 and in 2018 she was Nominated for Best British Female Solo Performer at the Brit awards. A good example of a spoken word piece by Kate Tempest would be 'Line In The Sand' which from my Interpretation is about the journey Kate faces to become the artist she aspires to be but the problems in which people put in front of her to stop achieving that goal. I really like this piece from a Lyrical and Visual perspective. On the Visual side the use of camera work is very Nice it starts of with some close ups of Kate and her microphone on top of a roof top, it quickly goes back and fourth between shots of Kate writing and Cutaways of objects which relate to the words which are being spoken. The use of symbolism is very apparent in this and I like the use of it because it adds more to visual aspect of the piece because its more interesting to look at rather than just filming the person performing the piece, using visual symbolism also allows the story that the song is trying to create which makes it more interesting and compelling to the audience.

Scroobius Pip
David meads, also known as his stage name Scroobius pip is a English spoken word and Hip-hop artsit from Stanford-Le-hope Essex. David originally made a name for himself as a one half of a hip hop duo known as 'Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius pip' Scroobius Pip is the manager of the label 'Speech Development Records' the company had been started up in 2006 after Scroobius pip had 1000 copies of his album 'No commercial Breaks' which had no bar codes or it wasn't registered anywhere so the company was born in attempt to get scroobis pip's album out into the industry. Since then Scroobius Pip has released 1 studio full length album 'Distraction peices' which featured artists such as 'Travis Barker' (Blink 182) Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), Zane Lowe, Sage Francis etc. Scroobius Pip also has a radio show on XFM called 'The beatdown' which is a show dedicated to hip hop and the importance of spoken word piece. A piece that I had looked at by Scroobius Pip was callled 'Introduction' which is one of the tracks of his 2011 album 'Distraction Peices' The concept behind the video is very simple at the start, it has scroobius performing the song to the camera but as it progresses and the songs lyrics start to get more aggressive, Pip starts doing some quite strange things such as; cutting half of his beard off, shaving his hair, lighting a poem on fire and setting alight a stick horse. What a find interesting about this video is that, apart from the random acts that occur in this video, the whole video is done in one shot which captures the entire look and feel of the location. Even though I would like to add various shots into the mix of my clients piece, I think that this formula is filming can be used within my clients piece because I feel like it allows the words to flow more naturally and comfortably for the artist, rather than just constantly cutting and having to change location for a new shot then starting off as a new scene, But in order to keep that shot interesting and watchable other things have to be happening either in the background or the performance of the artist.

Donald Glover
Donald glover is a Grammy and Oscar nominated Actor, Musician, Writter  and Comedian. Mostly known for his roles in films and TV series such as Atlanta, Community,  The Martian and Spiderman, and also his Music persona 'Childish Gambino' Donald Glover is a visionary writer of music and television who has in the past performed stand up on before his rise to fame. I watched Donald's comedy special 'Weirdo' which I found to be a very funny and well performed stand up performance. Donald in this special covers various topics, none of them being massively original but the way he covers the topics of 'Racism, Sexual encounters with women, Music, His childhood etc. One of my favourite jokes in the performance is when Donald tells the story about when he was rumoured to play Miles Morales in the Spiderman reboot, I found it very funny from a writing perspective because the way Glover describes how the internet reacted to the rumours that he was playing  the role was very funny because it I remember when these rumours had been flying around, the way he shows the comedic value of both sides of opinions, which appealed very much to me because in modern day culture when anything is announced  casting wise for a franchise many people over speculate over things which don't really need to speculated over. After watching this performance it has gave me an idea of how to film my Clients piece in the way that when vocal pieces are being performed when certain things are said for dramatic or comedic effect I can use the use of close ups to depict the reactions of performers face so it assists the visual side of the pieces and adds more emotion.

Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais is a Comedian, Actor and Writer mostly known for his roles  such as; The office, Extras, The Ricky Gervais show and his comedy specials. I had watched Ricky's a peice by Ricky which I had heard about called Noah's ark where Ricky does an entire performance of him reading the story of Noah's ark whilst performing a comedy routine.I find this very interesting because I think it applies to spoken word well because Ricky is basically reading out something to the audience but in order to keep that entertaining he uses ideologies and anecdotes in order to create a comedic narrative to the original story. After watching this I found that when filming stand up or spoken word it is more helfpul to add a variety of shots so I can show the performer body and facial expressions better, so if the shots have more of a selection it will seem more enjoyable to watch for the audience.
