Panning Shots: I wanted into using pans for this project because after looking into music videos from musical and spoken word artists this a convention which is typically used to capture the movement of the artists performance, Panning shots are shots which begin still, then either veered right or left. for example in the music video for Kendrick Lamar's song 'Kings Dead' there is a large use of pans and zooms which reveal certain visual elements or performances occurring on screen. I like the way this video particularly uses panning because it usually reveals something visually interesting or humorous for example at the 0:50 to 1:00 of the video there is a close up shot of some money being gambled then it slowly zooms out to a group of women and the camera then slowly pans left till it is stopped at a barber shop and then zoomed into a close up of the rapper Jay Rock performing his verse. This shot is very creative because its capturing so much within one shot, we basically get an entire area captured and closely examined within one shot, its important for me to observe this is I am filming this project myself because it shows me how capture performance while revealing other details of scenery and still being able to draw the attention to the performance of the artist.
Use of overexposure - I want to try out some use of over exposure when filming because the weather has changed I wanted to looking into using the sunlight to my advantage even though this could potentially cause some shots which look too over exposed but I'm willing to take the risk to see what visual results I may get. A good example of video which uses overexposure would be the video for Travis Scott's song 'Butterfly effected which uses a variety of visual techniques to create an immerse psychedelic and fantasy like visual experience for the audience. A good use of the over exposure in this video is when certain objects are highlighted around the artist which can add key narrative or subliminal messages into the video. I think after watching this video I will be able to use some elements of using overexposure but not decadently to degree I want to use it in because I think the over exposure in this is more here to compliment the visual effects but I would be very interested in experimenting with this type of technique.
Use of scenery - To make my cinematography slightly more interesting I wanted to use some nice looking outdoor spaces where I can capture a variety of colours and for some natural light which will compliment my visual style more. I looked at Stormzy's video for 'Shut up' which features similar scenery which I plan on using. The video is also shot in a similar way to how I want to shoot the project. The video is not necessarily a work of art in the sense that the many uses of angles or techniques used, I just think the setting and the maintained shot throughout out the video captures the performance, in one take very capably. I want to be able to film in this type of way but still be able to add some more shots and visual experiments into the mix. After studying this video I can understand that being able to capture the performance in the correct way that makes it feel more natural will be the most appropriate way to present the artist I will be working with.
